5 Developer Workflows That Save Hours Every Week

Most developer productivity advice focuses on editors, IDEs, and terminal shortcuts. But a huge chunk of daily development time goes to auxiliary tasks: decoding tokens, formatting data, converting between formats, and verifying outputs. These micro-tasks add up to hours every week.

Here are five workflows that eliminate common time sinks.

Workflow 1: API Response Debugging

The problem: You get an unexpected response from an API. The body is a minified JSON blob, maybe with a Base64-encoded field, a JWT token, and a Unix timestamp. You need to understand what's inside.

The slow way: Copy the JSON into one tool, format it, copy a Base64 field into another tool, decode it, copy the JWT into yet another tool, decode that, then manually convert the timestamp.

The fast way: Use a single toolkit where you can bounce between tools without leaving the browser.

The Workflow

  1. Paste the raw response into a JSON formatter. Expand and validate the structure.
  2. Spot a Base64 field? Copy it, switch to Base64 decoder. Now you can see the actual content.
  3. Find a JWT in the response? Switch to a JWT decoder. Inspect header claims, check expiration timestamp, verify the algorithm.
  4. See a Unix timestamp? Switch to a timestamp converter. 1706745600 becomes 2024-02-01T00:00:00Z. Now the response makes sense.
  5. Need to compare with yesterday's response? Use a diff tool on the two formatted JSONs.

The key insight: each step takes 5 seconds when your tools are tabs in the same browser window. It takes 30+ seconds per step when you're searching for "base64 decode online" each time.

Workflow 2: Data Format Transformation

The problem: Data arrives in one format but your consumer needs another. CSV from a database export needs to become JSON for an API. YAML config needs to be JSON for a deployment tool. JSON response needs to become TypeScript types for your frontend.

The slow way: Write throwaway scripts. python3 -c "import csv, json; ...". Copy-paste between Stack Overflow answers. Debug your one-off converter when it hits an edge case.

The fast way: Direct format conversion tools.

Common Transformations

CSV to JSON — Your data team gives you a CSV export. Your API expects JSON. A converter handles the mapping, including:

  • Detecting header rows automatically
  • Handling quoted fields with commas inside
  • Converting numeric strings to actual numbers
  • Dealing with empty cells (null vs empty string)

JSON to TypeScript types — Your API returns a JSON response. Instead of manually writing TypeScript interfaces, paste the JSON and get type definitions generated automatically. This handles:

  • Nested objects becoming nested interfaces
  • Arrays with typed elements
  • Optional fields (detected from null values)
  • Union types when array elements differ

JSON to YAML and back — Kubernetes configs, Docker Compose files, GitHub Actions workflows. These formats are interchangeable, but the syntax differences trip people up. Converting between them eliminates YAML indentation errors.

Workflow 3: Credential and Token Management

The problem: You work with JWTs, API keys, encrypted values, and hashed passwords daily. You need to generate, decode, verify, and compare these values constantly.

The slow way: Googling tools each time, using random websites that may or may not be processing your tokens server-side, writing shell one-liners with openssl.

The fast way: Client-side tools where sensitive data never leaves your machine.

Daily Token Tasks

Generate a UUID for a new resource: Instead of uuidgen in the terminal (which doesn't exist on all systems) or python3 -c "import uuid; print(uuid.uuid4())", use a UUID generator that lets you pick v1, v4, or v7 and copy the result.

Decode a JWT from a bug report: Customer support sends you a token from a failing request. Paste it into a client-side JWT decoder. Check: Is it expired? Is the issuer correct? Are the claims what you expect?

Generate a secure password for a service account: Need a 32-character password with specific requirements? A password generator with configurable length, character sets, and entropy calculation saves you from openssl rand -base64 32 and then manually removing unwanted characters.

Hash a value for comparison: You need to verify that a file's SHA-256 matches what the vendor published. Paste or type the content, get the hash, compare. No shasum command to remember.

The Security Angle

Every one of these tasks involves sensitive data. When you use a client-side tool, you can verify (via browser DevTools Network tab) that nothing leaves your machine. With a server-side tool, you're trusting that someone else's server doesn't log, cache, or leak your credentials.

Workflow 4: Code Formatting and Standardization

The problem: You review code from different sources — pull requests, Stack Overflow snippets, legacy codebases, AI-generated code. The formatting is inconsistent, making it hard to read and compare.

The slow way: Configure Prettier or your IDE for each one-off snippet. Argue about indentation. Manually reformat.

The fast way: Quick formatting tools for one-off tasks (keep Prettier for your project's committed code).

When Quick Formatting Helps

Reviewing SQL from a database admin: They paste a query in Slack. It's a single line, 400 characters long. A SQL formatter turns it into a readable, indented query in seconds.

Minifying JSON for an API call: Your formatted config.json is 2KB. The API wants it as a query parameter. A minifier strips whitespace and gives you a one-liner.

Formatting XML from a SOAP API: Yes, SOAP still exists. The responses are unformatted XML blobs. An XML formatter makes them readable.

CSS cleanup: Someone pastes inline styles from an email template. A CSS formatter organizes properties, fixes indentation, and makes it reviewable.

The point isn't to replace your project's automated formatting pipeline. It's to handle the countless one-off formatting tasks that don't go through your build system.

Workflow 5: Pre-Deployment Verification

The problem: Before deploying, you need to verify configurations, check environment variables, validate tokens, and ensure data integrity. These checks are manual and easy to skip.

  1. Verify environment variables: Decode any Base64-encoded values in your config. Confirm they contain what you expect.

  2. Check JWT configuration: Generate a test token with your production secret and verify the claims. Does the expiration match your expected session length? Is the issuer set correctly?

  3. Validate JSON configurations: Format and validate your deployment config files. A syntax error in a JSON config file can bring down a service.

  4. Compare configs between environments: Use a diff tool on your staging vs production config. Spot any differences that shouldn't be there.

  5. Verify file checksums: If you're deploying artifacts, compare SHA-256 hashes against your build output. Confirms nothing was modified in transit.

  6. Test regex patterns: If your deployment includes routing rules or validation patterns, test them against sample inputs before they go live.

The Compound Effect

None of these individual tasks is dramatic. Formatting JSON takes 10 seconds instead of 30. Decoding a JWT takes 5 seconds instead of 60. Generating a UUID takes 3 seconds instead of 15.

But developers perform dozens of these micro-tasks daily. At conservative estimates:
